Energy Savings Helps You Go Green
Energy Savings’ Green Energy Option has made significant strides in reducing the environmental impact of our customers’ everyday energy use. Your investment in GEOgas, GEOpower and GEOhome are helping offset our collective carbon footprint through the support of clean energy initiatives across North America, and the results are clear:
- Since 2007, our Green Energy Option has offset over 20,000 metric tons (20 million kg or 44 million lbs.) of carbon dioxide. That’s like taking 4,000 cars off the road for a year, or like planting 40,000 carbon dioxide absorbing trees.
- GEOpower has contributed more than 300,000 MWh of clean, renewable energy. That’s enough green energy to power 30,000 homes a year!
- And the list is growing!
Green Energy Tips
We all have busy lives, and the thought of changing your family’s home energy use habits can be intimidating. But there are a few simple things you can do to help save energy – and preserve the planet for future generations. Start by:
- Adjusting your thermostat:
By setting your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer you can save on heating and cooling costs. - Replacing your thermostat with a programmable one:
Getting a programmable thermostat enables you to lower the heat when you sleep and have it rise before you wake. It can be set to lower while you're at work too, saving you 5 - 10% a year on your heating bill. - Replacing old incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent
light bulbs (CFLs):
In addition to using up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent light bulbs also last for up to 15,000 hours—15 times the old bulbs. - Unplugging appliances when not in use:
“Vampire energy loss” can make up 5 - 8% of a home’s total electricity per year. Unplug unused appliances or consider getting a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts vampire energy use. - Washing clothes in cold water whenever possible:
As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. - Line drying:
Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. - Taking shorter showers to reduce water use:
This will lower your water and heating bills too. - Buying Green Energy:
By participating in green energy programs you’ll help invest in solar, wind, and other alternatives to coal. And the best news: It has a huge green impact -- up to half of your carbon footprint can come from home energy use.
